Silver Libertad coins debuted from the Mexican Mint in 1982 with only a 1 oz silver coin. This was the sole option in the series from 1982 to 1990. In 1991, the mint expanded the series for the first time with the introduction of four fractional-ounce coins: 1/20, 1/10, 1/4, and 1/2 oz silver. The next round of expansions would see larger coins join the series.

These larger coins included, first, the 2 oz and 5 oz coins in 1996. By 2008, the Mexican Mint added the last of the large coins in the form of the 1 Kilo Silver Libertad. This has often been one of, if not the lowest minted coins in the series.

Her figure is based on the ancient goddess Victoria who was honored by victorious war generals upon their return.
