This 1935 401.547 oz U.S. Assay Office at New York Gold Bar is known affectionately as the Big Apple in honor of the nation’s largest city. This bar was refined by the U.S. Assay Office for the specific purpose of international trade in the early 20th century. With the Mocatta & Goldsmid Ltd. hallmark on the obverse side, you can see that these bars were used for their original intention. The bar is available to you in a hard, black travel case for delivery.
As you look at this gold bar, you will find a beautiful golden-yellow color that is uniform throughout the bar’s field. Given its age, the bar remains in great condition and shows very few of the common casting imperfections you often see in simpler bars of this type. The most evident of these are the cracks on the bottom that formed naturally as the bar cooled.
Obverse design elements on the 1935 401.547 oz U.S. Assay Office at New York Big Apple Gold Bar include simple hallmarks. The inscription of A2220 identifies the lot the bar came from, with the seals of both the United States Assay Office at New York and Mocatta & Goldsmid Ltd. featured on this field. The purity of the bar is noted as FINE 996.9. The only other marking you will find is on one of the short ends of the bar where a 29666 serial number is noted.
The United States Assay Office at New York was one of the finest in the U.S. Assay Office. The refiners here had a reputation for achieving incredible purity levels in the production of both gold and silver ingots. The office was established in March 3, 1853 and opened a year later at No. 30 Wall Street. The U.S. Assay Office at New York has a rich history that once saw it operate as the largest gold refiner and processor on the U.S. East Coast. When it closed in 1982, it was the lone public gold refinery still operating in the United States.
