Originally opened as a Branch Bank of the United States, the building that once housed a bank was transformed into the United States Assay Office New York in 1854. The building was built at No. 30 Wall Street in New York City in 1823 and the Act of March 3, 1853, would change the building to serve as a United States Assay Office responsible for assaying and producing raw bullion. Silver and gold ingots from this Assay Office are some of the most popular with modern collectors. The US Assay Office in New York City remained operational for more than a century in the heart of America’s financial hub. From its opening in 1854, the New York City Assay Office remained operational until 1982 when it was closed. Beginning in the 1800s, Assay Offices across the United States fulfilled the sole function of receiving bullion deposits from the public or from mining prospectors to assay and verify the precious metals. Any Assay Offices that remain in operation today operate solely as a part of the national coining system.
These 1955 991 oz US Assay Office New York Silver Bars were produced and assayed in 1955. The bars have only a small stamp from the assay office on the primary face of the bar. At the top of this design field, you will find a small, circular stamp with the words 999, FINENESS, US ASSAY OFFICE, and NEW YORK within this stamp. The only other markings on the bar are found on the top and bottom edges. There is a 4 stamped on the top, with 6994 A on the bottom.
Please note that these bars were assayed in 1955 and do show signs of age. Refined more than 65 years ago, these bars will show minor flaws such as nicks, scratches, scuffs, and dings. Please also note that older silver bullion such as these bars can show toning. This is part of the natural oxidation process and has no impact on the value of the silver in the bar.
