The Australian Stock Horse Series was unique in its release schedule across the five-design release. The 5 oz proof gold coin was released one year behind the date mark of the gold and silver bullion versions in the collection. For example, the 2016 5 oz Proof Stock Horse Gold Coin bears the same reverse design as the 2015 Australian Silver Stock Horse coin.

Australian Stock Horses earned international regard for their performance on the fields of battle in World War I. ANZAC forces from Australia and New Zealand serving for Great Britain in the war used the Australian Stock Horse as cavalry mounts. Their strength and stamina in battle earned international acclaim for the breed.

On the reverse of 2016 5 oz Proof Australian Gold Stock Horse Coin is the image of an Australian Stock Horse leaping over a fence. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include “Australian Stock Horse” across the top of the design field and “2016 5 oz .9999 Gold” along the bottom of the design field.

The obverse face of 2016 5 oz Proof Stock Horse Gold Coins bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy featured on this side is the fifth to appear on Australian coins and was created in 1998 for the Royal Mint of England by Ian Rank-Broadley.
