For nearly 200 years, Johnson & Matthey served as a global leader in the precious metals industry. Founded in 1817 by Percival Norton Johnson, the company was initially founded in London to serve as a gold assayer. More than three decades later, George Matthey joined the company in 1851 and its name was changed to Johnson & Matthey.
One year later, in 1852, Johnson & Matthey became the official assayer and refiner for the Bank of England. It also served as a supplier of precious metals to jewelry, silverware, and cutlery trades. In 1874, it was commissioned to produce the kilogram reference standard for use by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures.
Obverse imagery on the 5 oz Johnson Matthey Gold Bars includes a number of incuse-struck inscriptions. These cast gold bars have inscriptions that include the name of Johnson Matthey in its simple oval logo. The purity of the gold bar is found on this side, as well as the metal content and weight of the gold bar. All markings are struck incuse, indicating the markings are sunk into the surface of the bar.
Reverse design elements on 5 oz Johnson Matthey Gold Bars offer a clear design field. There are no purposeful design markings or inscriptions on this field of the bar. As most cast gold bars are produced with a closed lid on the mold and at least one face of the bar down in the mold, there is one side that comes out with no inscriptions or designs. You will, however, find that there are striations and textures visible on the reverse that resulted from the cooling and settling of the gold bar.
These 5 oz Johnson Matthey Gold Bars are available to you with plastic wrappings around the bar inside of its shipping box to protect it during delivery. Johnson Matthey gold bars available here are not brand new. Johnson Matthey exited the precious metals industry in 2016 when it sold all of its assets to Asahi Inc. of Japan.
