Introduced in 1850, the iconic Double Eagle design has become an icon of American coinage. This celebrated coin was first minted as the result of the California Gold Rush. As gold began to pour into the nation’s coffers, Congress passed legislation to create the Double Eagle coin in 1849. The noted engraver James Barton Longacre created the now-renowned design that eventually became the country’s largest circulating gold coin. This design was also modeled after the nation’s Great Seal. The obverse side of the Gold Double Eagle shows Lady Liberty—a design influenced by a Greco-Roman sculpture.
