Description
Pre-33 $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle Coin (BU)
Best known for its recessed artwork, the $5 Indian Gold Half Eagle was first released in 1908. It would be the last Half Eagle Coin ever produced by the US Mint prior to the 1933 cessation of gold currency. Due to its exceptional purity of 90.0%, the Indian Gold Half Eagle makes a formidable addition to any investment portfolio. Furthermore, its modest size of .2418 troy oz is ideal for individuals who prefer self-storage over third–party facilities. All Indian Half Eagles included in this collection are guaranteed to ship in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) condition.

For the obverse of the Indian Half Eagle, sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt replaced the pre-established Lady Liberty portrait with the profile of a Native American chief. This change was meant to illustrate the US’s new sense of national identity. Pratt depicts the noble chief with a dignified expression on his face as he proudly wears the traditional feathered headdress of his ancestors. He is encircled by a series of thirteen stars that are separated by the word, “Liberty” and the coin’s mintage year.
Noticeable changes were also made to the coin’s reverse side. While previous artists had used the classic Heraldic Eagle for the it artwork, Pratt chose to revise the image by providing a realistic portrayal of the eagle instead of a figurative emblem. He depicts the eagle stoically perched on top of the olive branch and arrows, as it would in real life, rather than clutching the objects in its talons as it would in an idealized representation. Another design change worth noting is the coin’s denomination, which no longer features any abbreviations or numerical symbols.
