Britain famously offers two major bullion coin programs each year. The British Gold Sovereign is a bullion coin that transitioned in the mid-20th century from being a circulation gold piece. In 1987, the Royal Mint brought one of the most famous designs in British coining history to a new bullion series.
Britannia first featured on a coin used in Britain all the way back in 87 CE. This Roman-issued coin was released during Hadrian’s reign as Roman Emperor and featured an effigy of Britannia. As far as British coins are concerned, Britannia reappeared in the late 17th century and has remained a fixture of British coin designs ever since.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse side of 2022 British Platinum Britannia Coins. This effigy of the Queen is the fifth-generation design to grace British coins and features Her Majesty in right-profile relief. Designed in 2015 by Jody Clark, it shows the Queen at the age of 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown.
Britannia is depicted in the reverse design of the 2022 1 oz Platinum Britannia Coin. This design was created in 1987 by Philip Nathan specifically for the Britannia coin series. It currently features on all weights available in the gold, silver, and platinum versions of the Britannia coins.
